Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties: One to One Mentoring Program
Aaron used to lay in bed crying because his dad showed no interest in being part of his life. With the pain of that, it crowded everything else out. He struggled to maintain his grades, and began to get in trouble at school. Aaron’s mom was worried about him, and turned to Big Brothers Big Sisters for help where Aaron was matched with Jeff.
The first meeting took place in the BBBS office. Jeff still remembers meeting Aaron for the first time; he recalls “I’ll never forget his curious eyes and smiling face that first evening.” Aaron claims that “I can always talk to him about anything.” At the beginning Aaron set out to accomplish two sets of goals for his match with his Little Brother. The first short term goals mainly focused on improving Aaron’s behavior in class. Jeff says he is making strides toward that one. The second set of goals are long-term and a little loftier. Aaron’s mother says, “having a male person in his life that really ‘listens’ to Aaron has resulted in better self-confidence, better grades and improved behavior”
