Women United™ Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign

February 16, 2022

United Way Hastings &  Prince Edward’s Women United, in partnership with the Quinte Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition,  launches a new awareness campaign focusing on sex trafficking in the local community.

“We have learned about the prevalence of human trafficking in our region and are taking action to educate parents, caregivers, youth and community leaders.  We all need to learn the signs and know where to reach out for help if someone needs it” says Liz Knuude, Women United™ Champion.

The topic of human trafficking has been an area of interest to Women United™ since its inaugural meeting in 2019. Beginning Feb 15th, Women United™ and Quinte Anti-Human trafficking Coalition will partner on a month long campaign to raise awareness and provide education on the issue of human trafficking in Hastings & Prince Edward Counties.

The campaign will bookend National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on Feb 22nd and is comprised of a series of thought provoking visuals that will compel viewers to learn more.  Posters will be displayed in local high schools, in city buses and on bus stops in Belleville as well as on a digital billboard.  A heavy social media presence as well as vignettes throughout business across the region will ensure as many people as possible are exposed to the awareness campaign.   A digital toolkit is also available on the United Way website for anyone to access which includes quick links to all emergency resources, places to go for more information, as well as the posters for download and printing.  www.unitedwayhpe.ca/humantrafficking

Youth2Youth HPE will be hosting a live Q&A session between local youth and Executive Director of Three Oaks Foundation, Sandy Watson-Moyles. Join virtually on February 17th from 6-7pm. Register here: https://bit.ly/y2yhumantrafficking

“It’s important that we collaborate to help spread the awareness.  Human Trafficking is a multi-billion dollar industry and it’s disturbing to know that the Quinte region is a prime location for these activities.  Our youth are at risk—by partnering with United Way’s Women United™ , we can leverage our resources to send the message that we’re fighting to make our region a safer place for all.”, says Lisa Mascherin, Quinte Anti Human Trafficking Coalition member.

Woman United™

Women United™ is an inclusive and vibrant global community of change makers bound together by a powerful sense of belonging — to one another, to our community and to the mission of transforming the lives of women and their families. In August of 2019, the inaugural meeting of Women United in Hastings & Prince Edward Counties was attended by 24 women leaders from our community.  These leaders identified common perceptions of our community, and how, they believe women and girls experience life here. Ultimately a focus was determined for our local Women United movement.
